"If you have an apple and I have an apple and we exchange these apples then you and I will still each have one apple. But if you have an idea and I have an idea and we exchange these ideas, then each of us will have two ideas.”
George Bernard Shaw (1856 – 1950)

The quote from George Bernard Shaw reflects the idea behind the Science to Business Expert Group.The S2B Expert Group is an initiative of Bureau BD. We would like to join with experts in the Science to Business Area to further develop this expertise

Introduction Science to Business
Sabina Renshof started 5 years ago her Science to Business activities for fundamental research institutes/groups in the Netherlands in the Spaceresearch sector. The Dutch governments asks scientific institutes to join with industries to jointly perform research which also should contribute to application oriented research.

We have met researchers in fundamental and applied research, each with their own approach, contacts and beliefs. We also met Reseachers form industry and business- managers who are not always alligned with academich researchers.

Some of our observations:
  - In our experience we found that researchers are more or less interested mainly in finding additional funding, they are not always interested in bringing knowledge/technology to markets.
  - S2B chains are mostly not well organized
  - S2B is certainly not a linear process
  - S2B should align with strategic goals of the partners involved
  - Industry want to be " in"  but is not always willing to pay for the pre-competive phase;
  - Industries organize their own innovation together with academics (Degussa for example)
  - Success of S2B depends on people within science institutes and industries who have patience and thrust and who are able to convince their decision makers

Objectives of the S2B Expert Group
  - Searching for best practices/good examples and sharing them with others in the Science to Business Chain;
  - Developing tools/methods;
  - Understanding the Science to Business process better and trying to improve this process;
  - Getting to know each other for expertise sharing;
  - To work on the scientific discipline Science to Business and (for example a research group with a professor S2B at university)
  - To understand the needs of the different partners in de S2B Chain;
  - To be a platform for experts in the area of S2B.

Planned activities
  - Gathering information of the members of the S2B expert group (short introduction, background and experience, projects, best practices)
  - Meeting second half of 2008 in the Netherlands
  - Starting a forum for questions
